Iceland Elopement in Þakgil & Katla Ice Cave | Tiina & Anthony

Tiina and Anthony traveled from Australia to Iceland for a wedding day that felt simple, meaningful, and completely theirs. She’s originally from Finland, he’s Australian, and with their families scattered across the world, Iceland became the perfect place to celebrate — quiet, beautiful, and stress-free.

They wanted a day that flowed naturally: no pressure, no timetable stress, just great moments and unforgettable scenery. And that’s exactly what the day became.

Getting Ready in Þakgil

The morning started in Þakgil, one of the most peaceful spots in South Iceland.
It was raining softly when I arrived — typical September in the highlands — and Anthony was already ready and waiting in their campervan while Tiina finished getting ready in their cozy cabin. A few sheep wandered between the cabins, eating grass and minding their business.

The atmosphere was calm, quiet, and really beautiful.

First Look by the Waterfall

Þakgil has countless little hidden corners, but they chose a small waterfall surrounded by bright green cliffs for their first look.
Umbrellas in hand, soft rain falling, sheep in the background — it felt like a scene that could only happen in Iceland.

Ceremony at the Riverbraid Viewpoint

After the first look, we drove a short distance to a viewpoint with sweeping views of braided rivers stretching through the valley.
There we met celebrant Erla, who performed a beautiful handfasting ceremony using ribbons Tiina made herself.

The timing was perfect — the rain stopped, the sun peeked in and out of the clouds, and the whole moment felt incredibly peaceful.

Exploring Þakgil for Photos

After the ceremony, we returned to Þakgil for more photos.
The weather kept shifting between rain and sun, but that gave us the most beautiful softness in the landscapes. And the best part: not a single other person around. It felt like their own private world.

Pizza Break in Vík Before the Ice Cave

Sometimes the best part of an elopement day is doing normal, cozy things — like grabbing pizza.
We stopped at Black Crust Pizza in Vík, which was perfect while waiting for the Katlatrack driver to pick us up.

Private Katla Ice Cave Tour

In the afternoon, we joined Katlatrack for a private ice cave tour.
The drive into the mountains was breathtaking, and the ice cave was a mix of deep blues, textures, and soft light — a complete contrast to Þakgil earlier that day.

We took photos inside the cave, and when we stepped back out, it started raining again… which then immediately turned into sunshine (classic Iceland).
The rain droplets with sunlight gave us some of the best images of the day.

Sunset on a Private Black Sand Beach

Before returning to Vík, the guide brought us to a private black sand beach.
The light was golden, warm, and absolutely perfect — the kind of light that feels like a reward after all the rain.

Tiina and Anthony just walked, laughed, explored, and enjoyed the moment. That’s the best part of photographing couples like them — nothing forced, nothing posed, just real connection.
