There’s something about Iceland that makes it the perfect place for unforgettable love stories. Mor and Emily’s surprise engagement at Skogafoss was nothing short of magical. An adventure filled with unexpected weather, raw emotions, and a breathtaking setting.
The Proposal Plan: Northern Lights or a Waterfall Surprise?
Mor had been dreaming of proposing to Emily under the Northern Lights, a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, knowing that the aurora is never guaranteed, we then had a backup plan: a surprise proposal at Skogafoss. Or, alternatively, an engagement shoot at the waterfall to celebrate afterward.
As fate would have it, their arrival in Iceland coincided with the worst storm in over a decade. With red weather alerts and limited chances of seeing the Northern Lights, the plan shifted. Though they managed to catch a glimpse of the aurora on their cameras, it wasn’t the grand moment Mor had envisioned. So, he made the decision—the proposal was happening at Skogafoss on the morning of February 8th.
A Moment in Front of the Falls
We arranged to meet at Skogafoss early in the morning, before the biggest crowds arrived. I had their license plate and a reference photo to recognize them from a distance, blending into the scene as a regular visitor. As they made their way towards the waterfall, Emily had no idea what was about to happen.
Skogafoss was in an unusual state that day. Due to snowmelt and shifting weather, the ground had changed, making it impossible to get as close to the falls as usual. As I watched from a distance, Mor guided Emily to a secluded rocky “island” in front of the waterfall, stepping through shallow water to reach it. It was the perfect, intimate spot for the big moment.
A Surprise from the Sky
Just as Mor got down on one knee, something incredible happened. Out of nowhere, a powerful hailstorm rolled in—tiny white snowballs falling fast, covering everything around us. It lasted only a few minutes, but right at the climax of the proposal, nature put on a dramatic show of its own. It was as if Iceland itself was celebrating the moment with them.
Emily said YES—with pure joy and disbelief in her eyes. The surprise, the raw emotion, and the unexpected twist in the weather made it an unforgettable proposal, one they will tell for years to come.
Capturing the Afterglow
After taking in the moment and embracing the wild beauty of Skogafoss, we continued with an engagement session. Emily was floating on cloud nine, repeating over and over how this was the best day of her life. We wrapped up at Skogafoss and made our way to Kvernufoss, a nearby hidden gem, for more portraits in the stunning Icelandic landscape.
