Eloping in Iceland / 10 March 2025
Planning an elopement or engagement adventure in Iceland? Congratulations! Iceland offers some of the most epic landscapes on Earth for your love story. From towering waterfalls and black sand beaches to mossy lava fields and glacier lagoons, this country is a dream backdrop for couples who crave adventure. But to capture those once-in-a-lifetime moments, you’ll want an elopement photographer who can handle not only a camera, but also Iceland’s unique environment. As an experienced Iceland elopement photographer myself, I’m here to share what to look for in your photographer and the key questions to ask, so you can find the perfect match for your big day (and enjoy every minute of it).

Not all wedding photographers are prepared for the wild beauty and challenges of an Iceland elopement. Here are some qualities that truly great Iceland elopement photographers bring to the table:
The weather in Iceland can change in an instant. One moment you’re enjoying a calm sunset, the next you might be facing strong winds or even snow (yes, even in summer!). A top photographer will have local knowledge of Iceland’s landscapes and weather patterns. They’ll know the best spots for different seasons and times of day, and have backup plans if a sudden storm or road closure derails the original plan.
(I even once went from a peaceful evening on Reynisfjara’s black sand beach to a surprise snowstorm at Kvernufoss waterfall in the same shoot – talk about unpredictable! Check out this engagement story to see how wild Iceland’s weather can be.)
By choosing a photographer who lives and works in Iceland, you’re ensuring they can confidently guide you through whatever nature throws your way, while still getting amazing shots. (I even stress this point in my Complete Guide to Elope in Iceland – having a local on your team makes all the difference.)
Elopements are all about telling your unique story. The right photographer will have a style that resonates with you – whether that’s light and airy, dark and moody, or in my case, a cinematic storytelling approach. Look for someone who captures the in-between moments, the genuine emotions and little details that make your relationship special. Rather than endless stiff poses, great photographers focus on natural movement and authentic connection. You want to feel the emotion in your photos years later, not just see what happened.
Browse their portfolio or Instagram to make sure you love how they document elopements, from the grand scenery shots to the quiet candid moments.
Trekking to a secret waterfall, hiking on a glacier, or driving down bumpy highland roads might all be part of an Iceland elopement. A great photographer is up for any adventure and will happily throw on crampons or rain boots to get to that epic location with you. They’re flexible and can adapt plans on the fly. If heavy fog rolls in or a road becomes impassable, an experienced pro will have a plan B (or C!) ready—whether it’s moving to a different nearby spot or adjusting the timeline to wait out the weather. This flexibility ensures your day stays stress-free and fun, no matter what.
Eloping in a foreign country can feel daunting, but the best photographers do more than just show up with a camera. They often act as guides and planners too. Responsive communication is key—your photographer should answer questions promptly and make you feel taken care of from day one. Many offer help with timelines, permit info, and vendor recommendations. For example, I provide my couples with a full Iceland elopement guide, unlimited consultations, and personalized location suggestions to craft your perfect day.
If a photographer is willing to help you plan and gives lots of helpful advice, it’s a sign they truly care about your experience.
You’ll be spending hours with your photographer on an intensely personal day—it’s so important you connect with them. A great elopement photographer will feel like a friend, making you laugh and helping you feel comfortable being yourselves in front of the camera. When you’re relaxed and having fun, the photos will reflect that. Look at reviews for mentions of “made us feel comfortable” or “felt like we were hanging out with a friend.”
(Many of my couples mention that it felt like exploring Iceland with an old friend rather than a hired vendor, which is exactly what I strive for!)
Last but not least, make sure your photographer is professional. This means things like showing up on time (or early), having backup equipment, and delivering on their promises. Check if they have clear contracts and policies, and if they’re insured. A reliable photographer also keeps their word on deliverables—like sending sneak peeks quickly and delivering the full gallery when promised.
Budget is obviously an important factor, and a trustworthy photographer will be upfront about pricing. Look for clearly defined packages that list what’s included (hours of coverage, number of locations, digital images, albums, etc.) and any additional costs. In Iceland, some elopements involve long drives or domestic flights, so clarify if travel is included. The key is no surprises: you should know exactly what you’re getting for the price.

Once you’ve shortlisted a few photographers, it’s time to reach out and ask questions. Don’t be shy—any great photographer will welcome your questions and provide honest answers. Here are some key questions to consider:
(Pro tip: Also check the photographer’s FAQ page if they have one for quick answers to common questions.)
I’ve made Iceland my home for years, exploring it end-to-end—from the popular Golden Circle to hidden gems in the Highlands. Couples often mention how valuable this local insight is. I also stress how being adaptable in changing conditions helps keep the day stress-free!
My photography style is all about capturing real moments in a beautiful, cinematic way. I’m drawn to tiny details—wind in your hair, that look in your eyes—and the grand scenery that sets the stage.
I do everything I can to make your day fun, relaxed, and stress-free. When you’re comfortable, your photos will be genuine and full of authentic emotion.
I don’t believe my job starts and ends with clicking the shutter. I’ll help you figure out the best spots, time the ceremony for golden light, and even recommend local vendors. It’s all about creating an unforgettable experience.
“Caroline made our dreams come true… It felt like touring Iceland with a friend.”
